When the moon is full, it can affect human behaviour, especially women. During the full moon phase, women experience heightened sexual desire. The human body cells are affected by the magnetic field of the moon. The gravitational forces increase, affecting our brain and hence leading to greater feelings of sexual arousal.

In nature there are certain events that happen at an absolutely regular basis. The seasons have a yearly cycle, the moon phases 29.5 days, night and day 24 hours and the tides 12.4 hours.

A menstrual cycle has about the same length as the moon cycle, which is roughly a 29.5-day cycle.

More women tend to ovulate during the full moon phase, hence birth and reincarnation being representative of the moon. This is known as the White moon cycle. Women would come together during this time, bleeding together at the new moon and ovulating at the full moon.

The full moon and emotions

The full moon can shine her light on emotions and fears which we may have hidden for years. The lunar theory, otherwise known as the lunar effect, is the idea that there’s some correlation between moon cycles and human behavior.

Aristotle believed that the moon was responsibly for epilepsy and mental illness, and this was a common belief for many centuries, with people up until 1700 thinking that the light from the moon would leave people sleep deprived, and cause them to act oddly as a result.

Many people dismiss myths concerning the influence of the moon, but real affects are being found through science.

Lunacy and lunatic stem from lunar, the Latin word for moon. It is believed that people were more likely to show erratic behavior during a full moon.

Another study looked at behaviour over a 5-year period from police records in Florida, which showed an increase in cases of homicide and aggravated assault around full moons.

A report in the journal, Current Biology, shows that the phases of the moon absolutely do have an effect on your sleep.

The report was released in 2013, but the results were a long time coming. The initial research took place in 2000, when a team of researchers from University of Basel, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the Switzerland Centre for Sleep Medicine studied 33 volunteers and studied their sleep in a lab over the course of 3 years.

A detailed study was carried out to determine if the full moon has any affects on peoples sleep habits. Their brain patterns were monitored while sleeping, along with eye movements and more. The data show that around the full moon, brain activity related to deep sleep dropped by 30%. People also took 5 minutes longer to fall asleep, and they slept for 20 minutes less time overall.

In the world of astrology, however, the fact that a full moon may affect your sleep is no surprise. “The moon controls the ocean (the gravitational pull from the moon on Earth controls the tides of the ocean), and humans are made up of 50 to 70 percent water, (depending on age and other factors),” astrologer, Lisa Stardust, tells Bustle. “Being that the moon controls the oceans and waters on Earth, the human body may be affected as well by the lunar phases.” As the moon affects the waters on earth, astrology believes it also affects the waters within us.

The full moon disrupts the deepest phase of sleep, the REM phase, as the cosmic night light can cause poor sleep quality,” Stardust says. Coupled with the potential for increased energy and restlessness, it may make sleeping during a full moon extra difficult.

A lunar-sleep connection in humans may point to an “echo of our evolutionary past,” says Michael Hastings, a research scientist at the University of Cambridge who studies circadian rhythms. “If you were a hunter–gatherer on the African savanna, you may want to be out hunting at the full moon,” he says. Still, the lunar-sleep relationship was a surprise, says Cajochen, adding that future research is needed to strengthen his findings.

It is thought that during a full moon phase, dreams can become more lucid and frequent. “During a full moon, if someone is normally a creative person, the energy that radiates from the glow of the moon may stimulate more vivid dreams,” Davida Rappaport, psychic, spiritual counselor, and tarot instructor, tells Bustle. While what they mean may not be immediately apparent, they are likely your mind’s way of exploring your inner feelings.

Practice self-care during the full moon, focusing on activities that allow you to release and re balance your emotions. A good example would be to use your creative side. Read a book, journal, pick up a paint brush and do some art or simply listen to your favorite music. Feelings are magnified during the full moon, so the more positive your outlook, the more positive life will become for you.
