The word “chakra”, translates to Wheel, which is seen in ancient cultures of Hinduism and Buddhism as a circle or ring such as the shape of the sun and the moon. It denotes any phenomenon which has a cyclical or circular motion.

The chakra system is a complex network of energy channels connecting these wheels and is mapped throughout the body. Chakras connect to every aspect of your life. They are ever spinning wheels of energy that are constantly moving and transforming your energy. When we say “energy” we are refering to our life force, which makes us alive and conscious.

The chakras are located within the spinal region of the human body. They are a part of the more extensive system called the subtle body . This energy is not visible by the naked eye, but can be felt by the majority of people. The subtle body connects directly with the physical body. One cannot live without the other.

What is the seven chakra system?

The chakras are at the centre of the subtle body system. They are in constant motion, exchanging energy between the “nadis” and the “aura”. The chakras are three dimensional vortexes that radiate outside the front and the back of the body. The vortex shape of the chakras enables them to pass through the energy that you come into contact with and expel energy tha you dont need.

When the chakras are out of balance, the entire subtle body is affected, which then manifests within the physical body, causing physical or mental ailments.

There are seven primary chakras in the subtle body.  These are made up of, the root chakra, the sacral chakra, the solar plexus chakra, the heart chakra, the throat chakra, the third eye chakra and the crown chakra. Each chakra corresponds to sound and light. Sound and light are both vibratory frequencies. These vibrations increase from the root to the crown chakra. Each chakra is also associated with its own color, essence and symbol, which vibrate at their own frequency.

The Root chakra

The root chakra or the chakra of the earth or the base chakra, is the 1st Chakra in the seven system, located at the base of the spine, the color is Red and the element is Earth. It is the foundation of our body like the roots of a tree, supporting the other six chakras. It relates to whatever grounds you to stability in your life, includes your basic survival needs such as food, water, shelter, material matters such as money, home as well as your more emotional needs relating to safety, trust yourself and self-confidence.

The location of the root chakra is at the base of the spine. It is the starting point of the ida, pingala and sushumnanadis. It is an incredibly important energy channel.
It is the root of your being and establishes the deepest connections with your physical body, your environment and with the Earth.

Physically, the root chakra governs adrenal glands, spine, blood, and reproductive organs. It is responsible for the functioning of the lower part of the body, such as the bladder, kidneys, and lower back. Adrenal gland is located at the top of the kidney, produces adrenaline, which stimulates the “fight or flight” response and ties directly to the Root Chakra’s survival drive.

The Sacral chakra

The sacral chakra is the second chakra. It is associated with the emotional body, sensuality, and creativity. Its element is water and as such, its energy is characterized by flow and flexibility. The function of the sacral chakra is directed by the principle of pleasure. The gift of this chakra is experiencing our lives through feelings and sensations.

The sacral chakra is also your centre of creativity.Passion is the fuel of creative energy. Everything you create, a poem, a drawing, or a website, originates from the energy of second chakra. It is also where your fertility originates. A person with an open sacral Chakra is passionate, present in her body, sensual, creative, and connected to her feeling.

The most common location for the sacral chakra is about three inches below the navel, at the center of your lower belly. In the back, it’s located at the level of the lumbar vertebrae. It is associated with the lymphatic system.

The sacral chakra is associated with water. Water is flowing, purifying, and adaptive to changing environments. The sacral chakra can act in the same way, allowing you to let go, to move, and to feel the change and control the flow of information from the body to the mind and from the mind to the body.

Physically, it is associated with the kidneys and reproductive organs: ovaries, testes, and uterus. The ovaries responsible for sexual development and producing eggs as well as controlling the levels of progesterone and oestrogen.

The Solar Plexus chakra

Your Solar Plexus chakra is known for its powerful energy and transformation. It is traditionally related to the element of fire.  It has a connection with the sun, heat, the energy of light, and all forms of power.

The most commonly accepted location for the third chakra is  between the navel and the lower part of the chest. That’s why it’s often referred to as the “solar plexus chakra.”

Closely connected to the digestive system, especially the gastric and hypogastric plexi, its main function is to help transform matter into energy to fuel your body. It governs metabolism and is commonly associated with the pancreas

The main function of this energy center is to provide actual momentum to move forward and realize personal desires and intentions in the world. It plays a fundamental role in the development of personal power. It feeds one’s direction in life and the actions taken in order to reach your goals. It influences preoccupations about social status and self-image.

The Heart chakra

Heart Chakra or Anahata, is the 4th Chakra in the seven system, located in the center of your chest, the color is green and the element is air. This chakra is the center of love, balance, and connection, and helps to shape your capacity for compassion, affection, trust and love.It is in the center of the energy system of the human body. It is a link between the lower and the higher three chakrasAnahata relates to the sense of touch that enables loving and healing touching. The name itself indicates the connection of the heart chakra with the heart itself, and, in the metaphorical meaning, with love.

Physically, the heart Chakra governs the thymus gland and immune system, heart, lungs, breasts, arms, hands. Thymus gland procedures lymphocytes, control immune systems.

A balanced heart chakra allows you to be sensitive to others, comfortable with who you are, to feel and give unconditional love and give you the power to protect yourself from internal and external negativity.  So, ensuring your heart chakra, is aligned is important.

The Throat chakra

Take a deeper look at the throat chakra, your fifth chakra, it is also known as your will center and how honestly you express yourself. Being untruthful violates the physical body and the spiritual component of the whole self.
You speak your choices using your voice and your throat. All choices you make can have consequences on an energetic level, either positively or negatively.

If you choose avoidance and decide not make a choice, it can also affect the well being of the throat chakra in an adverse way. For example, if you repress your anger and choose to not speak out, it could manifest itself into laryngitis.

You probably have experienced a lump in your throat when you feel stymied or find yourself at a crossroads of not knowing how to speak the right words in any given situation, perhaps even dampening your own emotions. The health of the throat chakra is signified by how openly and honestly you can express yourself. The biggest challenge affecting the throat chakra is expressing yourself in the most truthful manner.

The throat chakra is often associated with the thyroid gland in the human endocrine system. This gland is in the neck and produces hormones essential for growth and maturation. Excessive stress, namely fear and fear from speaking out, can affect the throat chakra, and thyroid problems may occur.

The Third Eye chakra

Third eye chakra is the spiritual center of the body that is strongly related to concentration and consciousness. The brow chakra is a gateway through which new levels of perception are obtained and awareness can be projected into higher dimensional planes.

The two most important energy channels Ida and Pingala meet and conclude in the sixth chakra area. Ajna represents the connection to the spiritual world and as such enables both intuitive insight, and the command of reality which you can achieve as soon as you transcend the dual understanding of the world and can calm your thoughts.

Within this superior presence, you can develop telepathic abilities that can manifest as the premonitions of what is to happen or as intuitive perceptions of other people.  These spiritual phenomena are commonly connected to the sixth chakra activity.
The Third Eye experiences can be described as  moments when our eyes are truly opened.

The sixth chakra connects our awareness of the world around us, and our “sixth sense” perceptions and acts as a command center of our psyche. The brow chakra color is dark blue or indigo, which symbolizes wisdom, inner peace, intuition and spiritual awareness.

On a physical level, the issues originating from third eye chakra imbalance are manifested in health problems with sinuses, ears, and head. Especially frequent migraines which are felt as tension or pulsation in the frontal lobe area or frequent sinus infections can be indications that your sixth chakra is not functioning properly.

The common imbalances can lead to concentration problems, fears, anxieties, and depression, which all originate from the sense of detachment of your true self.

The Crown chakra

The Crown Chakra is associated with the color violet or white. Which of these two colors you wish to associate with your crown chakra is your personal preference. My preference is to liken the energy and color of this chakra to the violet flame of transmutation which is a blend of both violet and white. A flame that never completely extinguishes itself in your lifetime. Certainly, any of your chakras, including your crown chakra can become blocked or misaligned, but it will not die. Everyone has the ability to gain access to higher knowledge. Discovery of truth and wisdom is dependent on the healthfulness of your crown chakra.

We use the seventh chakra as a tool to communicate with our spiritual nature. It is through this aspiring vortice that the life force is dispersed from the universe into the lower 6 chakras. It has been referred to as God, Universe and Love. The merging energy that takes place in the crown chakra is the key to transendence, freedom and enlightenment.

The Crown chakra is primarily associated to the pituitary gland, and secondarily to the pineal and the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland work in pair to regulate the endocrine system.  Because of its location, the crown chakra is closely associated with the brain and the whole nervous system.
