Applying essential oils to the skin has become increasingly popular in aromatherapy practice, bringing effective benefits through massage. The essential oils penetrate the skin layers and circulate through the body. Used in their purest form, essential oils are powerful and may cause irritation to the skin so always mix them with a carrier oil to dilute. Typically, you should use around 20 drops to 2tbs carrier oil.

I am often asked what to do with essential oil. There are a huge number of essential oils to choose from, some which are in their pure form, others which are mixed blends of different oils. Begin to gather up a starter kit of essential oils for your home so that you can work with them and find which ones suit you.and your needs.

A guide to get started is to buy a few of the more popular oils. I would suggest starting off with the following:

Tea tree oil for its multipurpose home remedy benefits

Lemon, as it is a great purifier

Lavender, excellent for relaxation, anxiety and helping to get to sleep.

Peppermint as a pain reliever.

Rose for its hydrating and anti -aging properties.

Bergamot for its pain relieving, antidepressant qualities.

Eucalyptus, perfect to treat the family with a cold or flu

Jasmine, to treat dry skin and alleviate tiredness.

Sandalwood for its multipurpose healing properties.

These are just a few suggestions to get you started onto your journey with essential oils. Feel free to add other oils of your choice to your collection.

So, what to do with essential oil? Firstly, they are excellent to use in massage. I am going to demonstrate below, a few easy essential oil blends to use at home for self -care.

Things to do before a massage

. First off, before and after massage always wash your hands thoroughly, to cleanse and avoid any oil getting into your eyes. Always do a skin patch test before commencing any massage with new essential oil fragrances. Dilute essential oils, unless otherwise directed by a qualified aromatherapist with a carrier oil. When massaging always apply the oils in the direction of the blood circulating to the heart.

Firming facial massage

1.) Add 5 drops of lavender essential oil, 3 drops rose oil and 2 drops of lemon essential oil to 1 tsp carrier oil., and mix well.

2.) Pour a small amount onto your hand and then spread it across your face and neck, avoiding the eyelids.

3.) Place both hands, palms flat onto your chin and lightly massage the skin slowly upwards towards your cheeks.

4.) Place your hands in the center of your forehead and massage outwards towards your temples.

5.) Use your thumbs to smooth along your eyebrow, moving from the center of your face towards your ears.

6.) Gently pat your cheeks from your nose out to your ears lightly squeezing the skin between your thumb and forefinger. Work along the jawline from the ears and back into the center of your face.

This is a nighttime routine, especially as it uses lemon essential oil, which may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Repeat this massage once to twice a week.

Alternatively you can use 2 rose quartz crystal face rollers to apply the massage to the face. Using crystals combined with essential oils amplifies the benefits to the skin and body.

Arm toning massage

1.) Mix 10 drops of lavender essential oil with 1 tsp jojoba carrier oil.

2.) Pour some solution onto your hands and rub vigorously into the inside upper arm, moving from the elbow up towards the shoulder. Repeat this step on the opposite arm.

3.) Next, take the triceps muscle in your upper arm and kneed the outside of the arm fairly strongly working in the direction of your heart. Repeat this step on the opposite arm.

Do this a few times a week to start to feel really good benefits of this massage.

Booty firming massage

1.) Mix 10 drops of rosemary essential oil, 5 drops of lemon essential oil with 1 tsp macadamia carrier oil. Shake well before use.

1.) Pour a small amount of the solution into the palm of your hand and warm it by rubbing your hands together.

2.) Take a fold of flesh at the top of your thigh

3.) Repeat 3 times on each side.

4.) Take a bottom cheek in each hand and knead firmly. Feel the warmth penetrate your skin.

Do this once to twice a week.

Carrier Oils

There are several types of carrier oil to choose from when massaging with essential oils. Try a few of these until you find one which suits your skin.

Sweet Almond oil

This carrier oil is particularly known for its skin softening benefits. It is perfect for sensitive and delicate skin types. Hydrating and nourishing, sweet almond oil is ideal to treat excema prone skin and stretch marks as it soothes and restores firmness.

Evening Primrose oil

Known as an anti-ageing oil, evening primrose revitalizes the complexion, leaving a firmer and brighter complexion. It is particularly ideal to use in facial massage.

Macadamia oil

Rapidly absorbing, macadamia oil leaves the skin with a non oily appearance. It is extremely good for areas of the skin with cellulite as it helps the circulation of fluid retention, boosting your circulation and nourishing the skin.

Sesame oil

Rapidly absorbed by the skin, sesame oil revitalizes and soothes irritated skin, whilst plumping and softening damaged skin.

What else to do with essential oil

Essential oils are excellent when used in your daily/weekly beauty regime. They can be put into the bath, used in the shower, added into body sugar scrubs for the lips, booty and body, and added to your moisturizer.

Below I am going to demonstrate a few examples of how to use essential oils as a moisturizer for various parts of your body.

Our skin needs moisture to protect it against the elements of mother earth. During summer we need to moisturize our skin to keep it from drying out. When you mix essential oil into your moisturizer you can gain the benefits that these plant extracts offer, from anti-ageing to antioxidant.

Evening moisturizer

To make an evening moisturizer, add 5tsb Aragon carrier oil. 5tbs apricot kernel carrier oil, 15 drops lavender essential oil and 5 drops of lemon essential oil into a container and mix thoroughly. Use in the evening only, as lemon essential oil is sunlight sensitive.

Now that your hands are hydrated and smooth, try this strengthening nail oil to get your whole hands looking and feeling great.

Nail oil

Mix 20 drops of lemon essential oil with 8ml of wheatgerm carrier oil. Slowly massage into your nails, one by one, concentrating on the cuticles. Wipe off with tissues. Do this once a week. Remember to do it in the evening as lemon essential oil is sunlight sensitive.

Dry feet scrub

There is nothing worse than having dry, cracked heels. Keeping your feet hydrated and moisturized is essential for healthy looking and feeling feet. We take our feet for granted daily. They deserve to be pampered after carrying our weight around all day every day. A good foot scrub using essential oils, used weekly, will bring relief from dry, tired feet.

Add 5tsp bicarb of soda and 5 drops of rosemary essential oil in a large bowl and fill with warm water. Stir the mixture through the water to dissolve. Now sit back and relax and put both feet into the warm solution. Sit like this for 10 minutes. Take your feet out and pat them dry. Do not rinse.

Next, take a handful of bicarb of soda and rub it vigorously into both feet, from sole to heel. Then rinse your feet off with plain warm water. Pat dry. Do this twice a week to start, then reduce to once a week when your feet are in good condition.

Now you have some good ideas of what to do with essential oil, add these rituals to your weekly body care routine.
